We recommend AVAST Home edition - FREE antivirus. We have been using this personally for over a year, and have had it miss NO viruses.
For other issues, such as spyware, malware, and smitfraud (that's those annoying popups that claim to be antivirus software but aren't) -

Malwarebyte's AntiMalware - We recommend that you purchase Malwarebyte's AntiMalware so that it will run like your antivirus - in the background - protecting you from malware. However, they do have a free version that is very useful in cleaning off anything that shows up, and if you do not want to purchase, it is still good to download and install the free one.

Spybot Search & Destroy (also free!)

If you have issues with avast and you need help, please call me. Their tech support wants you to sign up for a year for a fee, and they are outsourced out of the country. I live here, speak fluent English, and am more than willing to help you.
